Bellevue Transit Center- Weekday Afternoon Rush
Walking from east to west down the central platform of King County Metro/Sound Transit's Bellevue Transit Center at the height of a typical afternoon weekday rush hour. Seen in order are various buses on various routes: A newer ST Express Gillig on route 532-Bellevue; a Community Transit low-floor articulated New Flyer running ST Express route 535-Lynnwood; the queue of commuters waiting for ST Express 566-Auburn Station; an older Gillig on ST route 555-Northgate/U District; another on route 532-Everett Station; that 566 arriving; a New Flyer hybrid tunnel bus heading for the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel on route 550, a Metro 30' Gillig on route 234-Kenmore; a Metro 40-footer on the 253-Overlake/Redmond; another ST Express Gillig on the 560 from SeaTac and West Seattle, another King County Metro bus on the 271 to Issaquah, and finally the 535, 532, 234 and 550 from earlier leaving the Transit Center. All this within about 2 minutes, and many other local and commuter routes have not yet arrived here! Incidentally, one could be excused for thinking this is solely a Sound Transit facility... that agency has, across the region, steadily increased its services over those of local, county-wide systems, mostly taking over express services from the smaller systems, except partly, in the case of King County Metro, since at least 1998. WTA Route 80X and 80X Trailer at Lincoln Creek Park & Ride
Whatcom Transportation Authority's route 80X, an express route on I-5 from Bellingham Station to Skagit Station in Mount Vernon, is an essential link for getting to the Seattle area from Whatcom County, linking WTA's system with Skagit Transit, and ultimately, Sound Transit and several other agencies. It serves downtown Bellingham, Lincoln Creek P&R (seen here, a transfer point and lot for Western Washington University commuters and students), Alger, Cook Road on Sedro-Woolley's outskirts, north Burlington, and downtown Mount Vernon. Being such a major southbound transit artery, students from WWU use it to get to greater Seattle, (SKAT's 90X being the link to Everett) Due to the student load, it is usually crammed to capacity on Fridays, so on these days (and additionally when needed), WTA runs an 80X "trailer" bus to handle the additional load. This bus runs ahead of the local 80X, making no stops down I-5 all the way to Mount Vernon for the 90X connection. It is about an hour's trip on the regular 80X, and about 45 minutes on the 80X trailer. Plugging into Energy Independence with 150 MPG Vehicles (Part 1 of 2) - Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming - 2007-07-12 - Continuing its examination of promising technologies to cut our nation's oil dependence and global warming pollution, this Thursday the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming will explore the potential of plug-in hybrid vehicles. Plug-in hybrids are similar to regular hybrids in that they have both an electric and gasoline motor, but are also fitted with an additional battery pack that can be plugged in, supplying enough power to travel 20 to 60 miles on a single charge rather than on gasoline. Combined with more renewable energy powering the electric grid, and cleaner ethanol fuels, plug-in hybrids can be a significant factor in the drive towards energy independence and putting the brakes on global warming. The hearing will be followed by a hands-on demonstration of the cars on the Capitol grounds. Natural gas plays a critical role in numerous sectors of our economy from home heating to chemical production to electricity generation to transportation fuel. With 3.4 percent of global natural gas reserves, the United States has the fifth largest reserves in the world. Since a low in 1986, domestic consumption of natural gas has generally increased and its uses have broadened. Natural gas has especially become popular as a cleaner alternative to coal in the electrical utility sector and gasoline and diesel in the transportation sector. As Congress considers energy policies that will increase our energy independence and help solve global warming, understanding the role of natural gas in our economy and how it might contribute to energy policies is critical.
