The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum opened its doors on October 21, 1959 and is one of the best-known museums in New York City and one of the 20th century's most important architectural landmarks. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, the museum, which is often called simply The Guggenheim, is the permanent home to a renowned collection of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, early Modern, and contemporary art, and also features special exhibitions throughout the year.

George Condo at New Museum New York
www.vernissage.tv | "George Condo Mental States" at the New Museum is an exhibition, which the artist calls a "conceptual survey" of his work. The show presents paintings and sculptures that George Condo created over the past thirty years. "Mental States" is divided into four sections each of which examines a particular theme or genre central to his work. Most of George Condo's work has been portraiture, not of living individuals, but of invented characters. This video offers a walk-through and an introduction by Gary Carrion-Murayari, Associate Curator, New Museum. George Condo was born in New Hampshire in 1957. He studied art history and music theory at the University of Massachusetts in Lovell. His first solo exhibition was in Los Angeles in 1983. Situated at the southwest corner of Columbus Circle, the Museum of Arts and Design is a polarizing structure. Before you enter, be sure to take a good look at the building, a work of functional art in itself. More than 20000 custom ceramic tiles finished in a white iridescent glaze make up the facade creating an ever-changing reflection based on natural light. A formerly windowless building that was renovated in 2008 to house the museum, the structure now features bands of glass that weave across the front of the building. Enter the light-filled space and find a collection focused on form and function. This is art, just not of the traditional variety. Jewelry, glassware, textiles, furniture and decorative objects all hold esteem here. But before dismissing these pieces as glorified flea market finds, its important to know, the art here is not quite everyday. Artists earn their place in this New York museum only if their work is unique, groundbreaking and/or exceptional as deemed by the established and respected curators. You may not know most of the names found here, but you will definitely be intrigued by their creations. The museum also offers a ton of interactive and alternative programming, including film screenings, family workshops and free lectures by guest speakers, like former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. After you toil through the exhibition floors, head up to the ninth story where the restaurant welcomes you with not only food, but also glorious views ...

Trolleys at the New York Museum of Transportation
The Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum operates for the public in partnership with the New York Museum of Transportation. Each museum is an independent group and each museum is located at either end of a shared two mile demonstration railroad. Our dual museum operation is truly unique! While the R&GVRRM collection is concentrated around railroad equipment, the NYMT has concentrated its efforts on trolleys and interurbans with the goal of electrifying a portion of the dual museum demonstration railroad. That goal has been reached in part with a portion of the railroad already under trolley wire. Public trolley operations were begun in 2006, and they are now an every Sunday (mid-May through October) offering of the museums. This video highlights some of the first public operations using one of the NYMT's two ex-Philadelphia & Western "Strafford" cars, the #168. Since this video was shot, the ride has been extended and will be extended even further for the 2008 season! We hope you will come visit our two museums soon and ride the trolleys!
