Digital Aquatics Auto Top Off with Reefkeeper and Float Switch

Rickets Reef: Auto Water Change in Action
Video showing my reef tanks auto water change. The process goes like this: 1- The ATO has the sump as the "best" level which is governed by float switches and the Apex controller. (6:40pm) 2- The Apex sets off a 30 sec alarm too indicate the H20 change is about to begin. (6:57pm) 3- The OSW pump pulls out about 1 gallon of water from the sump into a container. This has a time limit that only last 45 secs (the time it takes to pump out 1 gal with the pump I use.....Rio 800). There is a second backup float switch in the sump that will go off if too much water is missing that will also shut down the rio OSW pump. Lastly the vessel that recieves the OSW has a float switch that will stop this process from happening if it's activated. (7:00pm) 4- the NSW is pumped into the sump from a holding vessel to refill the tank to the "best" level. (7:04 - 7:05 pm). The Best level float switch will shut off the NSW pump when activated. that's it....all done.

Home made aquarium auto top off
Two float switches detect when water in the sump or refugium is low. Activates a pump to refill to the proper level. If the upper float switch fails, there is a third backup float switch which shuts down the entire device from working and sounds an alarm until the lower two float switches are checked. Has a push button to bypass and manual fill the sump. Has a main power switch and a switch to turn of the speaker. Not added yet is a fourth switch in the fresh water reservoir which when the water supply is low, will also shut down everything and sound an alarm. See my other video ATO tour.

Zero Edge (ZeroEdge ) - 30 gallon square
My Zero Edge reef up and running after about five weeks. The core guts are functioning and the shell needs to be built around it. The pump is an Iwaki 30XRLT, 1200GPH @ 0 ft. I made my own return nozzle out of a Sched. 80 PVC cap with holes drilled into it in intersecting angles, so that all streams converge and create chaotic flow about 4 inches from the outlet. The SPSes love it. Skimmer is way over sized ( an Aqua C 180 ) but I've found that a way big skimmer properly tuned to produce dry foam works much better than the recommended size for any given tank. Sump is a DIY based on a 25 gallon tank. Auto refill system - absolutely essential to a Zero Edge due to their high evaporation rate - is a Kent mechanical float switch with two electrical float switch emergency cutoffs. These switches are in serial to the 24 V solenoid valve ( a regular sprinkler valve.) On top of that, the solenoid power is energized only for 10 minutes 4 times a day. Fresh water filter is 5 micron mechanical, GAC, and nu-clear DI beads. Source water here ( Reno, NV ) is good enough to not need paranoid RODI; plus, no way to accommodate waste water anyhow. Here is a list of '+' and '-' aspects of owning this tank : Good : - Temperature stays *exactly* the same as the surrounding air in summer, regardless of the tank's light output. - Gas exchange is probably at 100%. Great for O2 saturation and getting rid of CO2, and other bad gasses. I wish I had a similar system for my Q-Doba eating coworker ...

Reef Tank Auto Top-Off
This is a quick video describing the auto top-off system on my reef tank. I'm using the inexpensive but reliable aqualifter pump and a simple reed type float switch. You can get the pump from www.marinedepot.com and other places. The float switches you can find on e-bay. Always be careful when working with electricity around saltwater.
