Construction of Hoover Dam, 1933-1935
Originally called Boulder Dam, the Hoover Dam straddles the border of Arizona and Nevada. Construction began in 1933 and was completed two years later. Built with 3.2 million cubic yards of concrete, the dam is some 726 feet high, ranking 20th in the world for height. From 1939 to 1949 it was the worlds largest producer of hydroelectric power; today the dam generates some 4.2 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. Lake Mead, the reservoir created by the dam, covers 247 square miles and is a major recreation area. Construction footage of the building of Hoover Dam. Hoover Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant Tour Part 1
These are a series of video clips that I took when some friends of mine and I visited the Hoover Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant back on December 28, 2008. Hoover Dam is located at Lake Mead at the Arizona and Nevada State line and just East of Las Vegas on US Highway 93. The highway goes over the dam, but a by pass bridge is being built across the Colorado River just down stream from the dam due to be completed in September of 2009. For more info about the bridge, go to www.hooverdambypass.org Video part 1 mainly shows the outside area of the dam as viewed from the visitor center observation area and from the top of the dam and part 2 are video clips are scenes taken inside some of the inner passage way tunnels and also inside one of the big main 650 feet long and 75 feet high generator halls with some good views of the water powered turbine generator units. Based on declassified missile targeting technology from Swedish aerospace giant Saab, C3 maps can be rotated around because each individual pixel has depth information attached to it. 3D data is calculated directly from high-resolution aerial photography, based on the positions and angles of the cameras to give each pixel its geographical position with very high accuracy. C3 maps also sport interior panoramas of points of interest based on HDR imagery, with room navigation, 3D menus and banners, overview maps and other interactive features. There's also street-level imagery captured using an advanced multiple camera system with overlapping viewing angles to capture the entire surroundings in stereo.
