www.VeeMD.wordpress.com. Vandana Bhide, MD, of the Mayo Clinic gives telephone interview on WJXT Channel 4 Jacksonville, Florida Morning Show regarding cronobacter infections in babies. An infant was found to die of cronobacter sepsis (blood infection). Walmart has taken Enfamil powdered infant formula off the market until it can be determined if the infant death was related to chronobacter contamination of the formula. The manufacturer of Enfamil formula routinely tests for this organism in batches of formula. Cronobacter sakazakii is a gram negative bacteria in the Enterobacteriaceae family. It is found commonly in the environment, including in the gastrointestinal tract of humans. Cronobacter can, under rare circumstances, cause serious bloodstream infections and meningitis. These infections can lead to death in infants under the age of six months, especially premature babies who receive formula via feeding tubes. Dr. Bhide is board certified in Pediatrics as well as Internal Medicine.
