Episode 27: The Hydrostone
Nestled in the North End of Halifax, the Hydrostone neighbourhood is the city's vibrant area. Built after the Halifax Explosion in 1917, houses were built to accommodate homeless families who were displaced by the devastation of the explosion. The neighbourhood adopted a "Garden City" design layout by Thomas Adams. Rowhouses were arranged along tree-lined streets with backlanes and grassy strips. After the explosion, materials of the houses fell onto the stoves; igniting a fire which ravaged the area. To prevent this, builders used non-combustible concrete blocks to construct the houses. Hydrostone is currently Halifax's premiere shopping destination with a myriad of stores and restaurants. It's been recently chosen as the second best place to shop in Canada by the Canadian Institute of Planners.

Achieving New Heights in Architectural Excellence - Jack Diamond
Achieving New Heights in Architectural Excellence Can taller buildings set new standards in beauty and sustainability? A presentation by architect Jack Diamond of Diamond and Schmitt Architects, Toronto. A free public event held by the City of Vancouver at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver on April 19, 2011, as part of the Higher Building Review process, which requires an enhanced review of building designs in cases whereby additional building height above policy limits is sought. The event also included a presentation by Rick Cook of Cook+Fox Architects New York, NY and a special session of the City of Vancouver's Urban Design Panel. Jack Diamond is the founding member of Diamond and Schmitt Architects Incorporated, which has been the recipient of numerous national and international awards for design and sustainability. Currently the firm, which has been named one of the 50 Best Managed Companies in Canada, has projects in six countries worldwide. He is a Fellow of the Royal Architectural institute of Canada and the Canadian Institute of Planners and an Honourary Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. Honourary doctorates include Engineering from Daltech and in Law from the University of Toronto. He is a Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Gold Medalist, a member of the Order of Ontario and an Officer of the Order of Canada.

Kugluktuk Climate Change Adaptation Project
Community planners Elisabeth Arnold and Ken Johnson completed a climate change adaptation plan for the community of Kugluktuk, Nunavut in 2010. The project participants included Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, the Geological Survey of Canada, the Government of Nunavut, the Hamlet of Kugluktuk and the Canadian Institute of Planners.

Commercial Street, Great Street
NANAIMO - Some say it resembles a movie set, others say it's just a fun place to hang out, eat, and shop. And now the Canadian Institute of Planners agrees; it's a great street. The organization has named Nanaimo's Commercial Street as the best street in the country. The harbour city was singled out during the first ever competition to identify great places in Canada.
