Today, it is considered to be the last very desirable classic Rolls-Royce. Rolls-Royce Limited was a British car founded by Henry Royce and Charles Stewart Rolls on March 15, 1906. On 1914, it also became an aero-engine manufacturing company. In 1973, the car division was separated and was called Rolls-Royce Motors. In 1931, the company bought its rival car maker, Bentley. From then on, and until 2002, Rolls-Royce and Bentley car models were often identical except for their radiator grille and minor details. The Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud was the centerpiece model for the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars from April 1955 to March 1966. It was the successor to the Silver Dawn and the predecessor to the Silver Shadow. The Silver Cloud was mainly designed by JP Blatchley and was a major improvement to the highly derivative Silver Dawn. Its chassis was a simple steel box section that was welded together. Weighing at a whopping 1.95 tonnes, the Silver Cloud III had a 4.9 L six cylinder unit with a twin SU carburettors, and a four-speed automatic transmission. Suspensions were independent coils at the front and semi-elliptic springs at the rear. Power steering and air conditioning became additional options in 1965. The Silver Cloud II came out in 1959. Cars The Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow is a luxury car that was produced in Great Britain in various forms from 1965 to 1980. It was the first Rolls-Royce to use a monocoque chassis, a response to concerns that the company was falling behind in automotive innovation. Initially, the model was planned to be called "Silver Mist",[3] a natural progression from its predecessor Silver Cloud. The name was changed to "Silver Shadow" after realizing that "mist" is the German word for manure, rubbish, or dirt. The Shadow featured a 172 hp (128 kW) 6.2 L V8 from 1965 to 1969, and a 189 hp (141 kW) 6.75 L V8 from 1970 to 1980. Note that headlamps and tailamps for this car are common on many cars of the era and should be relatively easy to obtain. One interested and seemingly knowledgeable buyer did a bit of research and thought this might be one of the last, if not THE LAST Freestone & Webb built car. About Freestone & Webb: Freestone and Webb was formed in 1923 by VE Freestone and AJ Webb for the sole purpose of car body building. Mr. Freestone was from Crossley Motors and Mr. Webb came from a French firm of coachbuilders. Its workshops were at Brentfield Road, Willesden, London, which was its only home during its existence as an independent company. They concentrated on building bodies to private order on Rolls-Royce and Bentley chassis, output on the Rolls-Royce eventually averaging some 15 per year. One of the body designs developed by Freestone and Webb became known as the "Top Hat". The firm also had a hand in popularizing the "razor edge" style. During World War II the company switched to aircraft production, mainly working on Spitfire wing tips. Freestone and Webb exhibited regularly at the London Motor Show and for nine consecutive years won the Gold Medal in the private Coachbuilders competition.
